Who is J. Cole and Why Should You Listen to His Music?

The Biography and Achievements of J. Cole

J. Cole was born Jermaine Lamarr Cole on January 28, 1985 in Frankfurt, Germany where his father was stationed at that time. His father is of African descent while his mother is of European origin. She worked for the postal service of the United States. His father turned his back on his family soon and Coles mother brought him and his brother Zach to the US, North Carolina. Cole was a shy kid and was immensely attracted to music and basketball. He played violin for some time and this was the time when he got addicted to music and started dreaming about being a musician someday. Rapping came natural to Cole and he started doing it quite often by the time he was 12. Upon receiving a music sampler one Christmas from his mother, Cole became hooked to music production. He joined a few local small time groups and started practicing rapping and making beats. Cole thought that a move to New York would let his musical ambitions breathe and he found the right excuse by expressing the desire to study there and majored in computer science, and kept working on his music side by side. After numerous days spent outside Jay-Z 's office in hopes of giving him a demo, Cole finally ran into his idol, but the reception was well below chilly. He was shocked weeks later by a call from the man, and was even more surprised to be asked to contribute to The Blueprint 3, heard on the appropriately titled "A Star Is Born." With only one mixtape in his discography, namely The Come Up -- boasting his own production credits beside those of major figures such as Salaam Remi, Large Professor, Just Blaze, and Kanye West -- Cole signed with Roc Nation. By the end of 2010, he issued two tapes for the label, The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights. Cole released his debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in 2011. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. His next album, Born Sinner (2013), also topped the Billboard 200. Moving into more conscious themes, 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014) topped the Billboard 200 and earned Cole a Best Rap Album nomination at the 2015 Grammy Awards. His jazz influenced fourth album, 4 Your Eyez Only (2016), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Cole's fifth album, KOD (2018), became his fifth number-one album on the Billboard 200 and featured a then-record six simultaneous top twenty hits on the Billboard Hot 100, tying with the Beatles. His sixth studio album, The Off-Season, which earned him his sixth number-one album, was released on May 14, 2021. Self-taught on piano, Cole also acts as a producer alongside his rap career, producing singles for artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Janet Jackson, as well as handling the majority of the production in his own projects. He has also developed other ventures, including Dreamville Records, as well as a non-profit organization called the Dreamville Foundation. Dreamville's compilation album Revenge of the Dreamers III (2019) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards. In January 2015, Cole decided to house single mothers rent-free at his childhood home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Cole has won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song, a Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Album, three Soul Train Music Awards, and 8 BET Hip Hop Awards. The Style and Themes of J. Cole's Music
