This may not be news for a lot of people, but you can send text messages via email, for free, to most major cellular providers. This tip is stellar in that it is part stupid frugal trick (save money on texting from your cell phone by emailing for free), part productivity (you can probably type faster from a normal QWERTY keyboard than a phone), and part tech geek. This article includes step-by-step instructions on how to text from email.

MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Service can be used to send longer messages and/or pictures, video, or audio content. It is most commonly used to send a photo taken with a camera phone to another phone. Most new mobile phones with multimedia capabilities support MMS. Due to the added capabilities, it often makes sense to send message via an MMS gateway if both are available. If the recipient has a more basic plan and cannot receive the message (e.g. image or video), then you can revert to an SMS gateway (and opt to send the media in an email instead).

Been using this in our communications center for a few years now. If you are on email, simply address it to (the phone number) @ (put in the carriers text set up). Such as [email protected],, and so on. Sometime is works best to put short messages in the subject block. Others can send short messages in the body. All kinds of code follows, so keep signature blocks and such out. Also be aware some phones (like ATT) will not get email-2-text, when they are on their home network. Good luck. We cut calling all our firefighters in from 25 minutes to 30 second by building and email group. I have also heard it be used for school parent alerts. Just have to keep the numbers and carriers up to date.

You can use this trick for sending voice mail converted to text from your landline to a text instead of email. I personally do not check new emails to my personal email accounts as I get them but I do check my texts real time.

I send SMS to Cell emails regularly but when I get replies Gmail never shows the persons name, only their [email protected]. I dont know any of my friends numbers by memory. I have to open the email to ses who it is from. Is there a way to have Gmail label these replies as they do real emails with their name in the Inbox? I have added their [email protected] to the address book but it doesnt change anything. Can anyone help me? Is there a Gmail preference to change?

I use Outlook 2010 as my e-mail client and as the extension. I tried sending e-mail/text through my Hotmail and G-mail accounts as well. All sent successfully, but I cannot not receive a text response at those addresses.

@Gretchen That could very well be the case. I have only been using this method a couple months, but no probs to friends on Verizon or T-Mobile. Until today 10/3/2017, a friend who has Verizon, kept getting messages from me that were either cut off mid sentence, or dramatically shortened en route, no matter if I used vtext or vzwpix. I finally had to tell them I would only send them short one sentence messages and longer ones would have to go to their old email addy which they rarely use.

Does anyone know if there is a way to make your email text appear in the same message thread on the phone? Every time I send a new message, it creates a new message thread/contact on the phone I texted with a random number that looks like a phone number starting with (410).
